"Just relax,”I said, "and let the water support you!”Of course, such things are usually easier said than done. Teaching my wife, Ellen, to swim has been full of danger一but not for her, for me. When I discovered that the university I worked at had a swimming pool, I was quite pleased. Swimming is a great way to exercise. So I suggested to Ellen that we should have a try. She the summer heat rolled in, she continued to resist my offers.
Finally, I asked her what was stopping her, and was surprised to hear, 一I can' t swim!
Most Australians learn to swim fairly early on, with school programs teaching it. With the population of Australia mostly gathered around the edge of the continent, going to the beach and swimming in the sea are very popular things, so someone who can't swim is fairly uncommon.
Ellen's reply drove me to make a foolish offer一that I would teach her to swim. If I’d foreseen the problems that were to come, I would probably have never set foot in the pool.
I persuaded Ellen to put her arms around my neck, and tried to let her legs float out behind her, while I gently pulled her along.
That night, I tried to sleep without moving my neck, as Ellen’s tight grasp had almost removed my head from my shoulders.
I had planned to take Ellen to a quiet beach at Robe. I think, in a couple of months, Ellen will be a little more confident in the water. But, just in case, I bought her a life jacket, so that she could float alone without holding me so tightly.

Isn’t it amazing that you never have to water your weeds or care for them and they still give
an unwanted crop? When I was young in California, my grandfather showed me how to dig up the weeds called Bermuda grasses. It was a terrible thing and they would really spread if you didn’t' get them out by the roots. When my wife and I bought our first house a few years ago, guess what I had to deal with? If you said weeds, you are correct. There was this certain patch of weeds that was similar to the Bermuda grasses.
After getting the inside of our home settled, it was time to work on the outside. On my hands and knees I attacked the weeds, getting each one out by the roots. Spring after spring that was my duty. Just this spring I realized that one particular weed was no longer there but another one came. So again, I got down on my hands and knees and began removing them from my yard. When I was finished, my yard was much better.
What hidden message is this true story providing? Sometimes our life can be so similar. Yes, we all have weeds in our life. These weeds can be challenges or negative thoughts. When we deal with these weeds of life, the solution is to get to the roots of them, remove them one by one and eventually you will make it. And when another crop of weeds comes up, deal with them directly before they spread, because now you know what to do with them by getting to the roots of them, it will give you more courage and wisdom the next time a problem crops up.
You could say we all need weeds in our life to challenge us to grow. Once you know how to
