Carrot juice, because of its many healthy benefits, is commonly called the "magic juice". It has been found that adding carrot juice to people’s diets greatly improves their health. And its delicious taste makes it popular with all members of the family as a beverage.
Carrot juice is one of the richest sources of vitamin A that can be used in the daily diet.
Lack (缺乏) of vitamin A can cause dryness and damage to the skin, nails and hair. Drinking carrot juice to increase the vitamin A in the diet is said to be good for many parts of the body, including the bones and teeth.
Drinking carrot juice is thought to be extremely helpful to the liver (肝脏), because vitamin A helps to clean the liver and reduce fat in it. And it is suggested that drinking carrot juice should be done regularly, rather than just from time to time.
Drinking carrot juice is also thought to improve the eyesight because of the vitamin A in the juice. Lack of vitamin A can lead to night blindness, which can be very dangerous, especially when the person is driving a car. An easy way to find out if you are lacking in vitamin A is to walk from a bright room into a dark room. Your eyes may have some trouble in getting used to the change of light if you are lacking in vitamin A.
How can you make carrot juice? Wash some carrots well in cold water. Scrape (刮) them lightly, but do not peel them, as this will take away valuable vitamins and minerals that lie close to the skin.
60. Lack of vitamin A can lead to _____.
A. skin dryness B. broken bones C. complete blindness D. liver cancer 61. According to the passage, carrot juice ______.

In addition to writing articles and books, Mark Twain delighted the audience with his public lectures about the faraway places he visited on his travels. People were eager to learn about his trips to places like the Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii), Egypt and the Holy Land. Twain often used the fees he earned from his lectures to pay for more adventures. His well-attended performances also served to bring attention to his published work. At that time, the public lecture was a very popular form of entertainment, and audiences’expectations ran high, but Twain never failed to amuse them.
Twain also wrote on amusing subjects. In 1873, he released a book called The Gilded Age. The book was a satire (讽刺) of the very wealthy of the time. A satire is a work that makes fun of bad human behavior, such as wasteful spending. Twain made people laugh at the excesses (无节制) of the rich.
In 1889, Twain took on other members of the Establishment. He wrote A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, about a boy who travels back to the time of King Arthur. Twain made fun of those who were given advantages not because they had earned them but because of their family connections. If you have never read any of Mark Twain’s works, try reading A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, or The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. They will make you laugh. 64. What do we learn about Mark Twain from the passage? A. He liked showing off by talking about his travels abroad. B. He thought the rich should show mercy to the poor. C. A freedom fighter staying in a hotel found a parrot in a golden cage repeating "Freedom! Freedom!"
The man thought, "I have seen many parrots, and I am sure a lot of them must want to be free from their cages, but I have never seen such a parrot whose whole day is spent calling out for freedom." He had an idea. In the middle of the night, when the parrot owner was sleeping deeply, he got up and opened the door of the cage. He said to the parrot in a low voice, "Now get out."
But he was very surprised to see that the parrot just stayed in its cage. He said to the parrot, "Have you forgotten about freedom? The door is open and your owner is asleep;
nobody will ever know. You can fly into the sky; the whole sky is yours."
But the parrot just stayed where it was. The man said, "What is the matter? Are you mad?" He tried to take the parrot out with his own hands, but the parrot started pecking at him. The man was also stubborn —he was a freedom fighter.
He pulled the parrot out and threw it into the sky. He was very satisfied because he had set a soul (灵魂) free, even though his hand was attacked by the parrot. He then went to sleep.
When the man woke up the next morning, he heard the parrot shouting, "Freedom! Freedom!" He thought the parrot must be sitting in a tree or on a rock, but when he went outside, he saw the parrot sitting in its cage. The door was open. 67. What can we learn from this story? A. Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated(忍耐) the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing , making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.
A. Laughter can prolong one’s life.
B. As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh.
C. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain.
D. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach and even the feet.
E. Although laughter helps cure the disease, doctors still can not put this theory into clinic practice.
F. Laughter is the best medicine.
G. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health.

But he was very surprised to see that the parrot just stayed in its cage. He said to the parrot, "Have you forgotten about freedom? The door is open and your owner is asleep;
nobody will ever know.
Freedom!" Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body.
