Whether you’re a host or a guest, there are many social situations that will call for

interaction(互动). How can you find good ways to communicate with others, and become a lot more comfortable around people in a conversational setting? Here are some suggestions to help.

Begin by introducing yourself.

Be aware of your internal monologue(长篇大论). When you suddenly feel that you’re

not able to make a conversation with another person, it’s likely that you’re worrying that you’re boring, not good enough, too unimportant, wasting their time, etc. Try to keep in mind that everyone has these self-doubts from time to time, but that it’s necessary to overcome them in order to communicate well with others.

Understand the secret of a good conversation. The secret at the heart of a good conversation is to listen and do very little of the talking, apart from encouraging the other person to open up.

Know how to ask an open question. An open question is a question that needs an

explanation for an answer, and not just a simple ―Yes‖ or ―No‖. Open questions tend to begin with: Who? When? What… Closed questions (Are you? Do you? Have you?) only bring you back to the point of not knowing how to get the conversation going.

Put the location comment together with the open question and your conversation will

be underway. For example, ―That’s a nice handbag. Where did you get it?‖ This lets the handbag owner talk about the day that they went shopping and all this funny stuff happened.

Know the stuff of a small talk. Be aware of good topics for the conversation. When you

first meet people, it’s important to keep the conversation light and simple.

Use words of a sensory nature. You can use such words as ―see‖ ,― imagine‖, ― feel‖,

―tell‖, ―sense‖, etc., in order to encourage the other person to keep painting a picture as part of their conversation.

Synchronize(同步). Once your partner–in-conversation has started talking, follow his or

her cue(提示) to keep the conversation going smoothly. Give encouraging feedback(反馈). You don’t even have to say things a lot of the time—nod, say ah-ha or wow or oh or hmm, and short encouraging statements such as ― Is that so‖ and ― Goodness!‖, and ― That’s amazing!‖, etc.

53. How many suggestions are mentioned in the passage?

A. Five. B. Six. C. Seven. D. Eight.

54.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. When meeting strangers, it’s not good to choose some complicated topics.

B. The secret of a good conversation is to listen less and talk more as well as giving others a chance to speak.

C. If you add some location comment and ask an open question, a funny and good talk is

likely to continue.

D. It’s important to give some encouraging feedback when talking with others.

55. The writer writes this passage in order to_____________.

A. tell us when to ask an open question or a closed question when talking

B. teach us how to catch people’s attention when communicating with them

C. tell us how to make a conversation when meeting people for the first time

D. give us some suggestions on making a good conversational setting when talking
