International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge gave the following speech at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games closing ceremony in the National Stadium, or the Bird’s Nest, in Beijing, China, on Aug.24, 2008.
Dear Chinese friends,
Tonight, we come to the end of 16 glorious days which we will cherish forever. Thank you to the people of China, to all the wonderful volunteers and to BOCOG(北京奥组委)!
Through these Games, the world learned more about China, and China learned more about the world. Athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees came to these dazzling venues and New stars were born. Stars from past Games amazed us again. We shared their joys and their tears, and we marveled at their ability. We will long remember the achievements we witnessed here.
As we celebrate the success of these Games, let us altogether wish the best for the talented athletes who will soon participate in the Paralympic Games. They also inspire us.
To the athletes tonight: You were true role models. You have shown us the unifying power of sport. The Olympic spirit lives in the warm embrace of competitors from nations in conflict. Keep that spirit alive when you return home.
These were truly exceptional Games! And now, in accordance with tradition, I declare the Games of the 29th Olympiad closed, and I call upon the youth of the world to assemble four years from now in London to celebrate the Games of the 30th Olympiad.
Thank you!

There are new findings that not enough sleep may cause people to gain weight. Researchers say a lack of sleep can produce hormonal(激素的) changes that increase feelings of hunger.
In one study, researchers in the United States examined information on more than 1000 people. The people had taken part in a long-term study of sleep disorders.
Some people slept less than five hours a night. They had 15 percent higher blood levels of a hormone called ghrelin than people who slept eight hours. And they had 15 percent less of the hormone leptin. Experts say ghrelin helps make people feel hungry; leptin makes you feel full.
The scientists say these hormonal changes may be a cause of obesity(肥胖症) in Western societies. They note the combination that sleep limitation is common and food is widely available.
The results were not affected by how much people exercised. People who are awake longer have more time to burn energy. But the researchers say loss of sleep may increase hunger especially for high-calorie foods, so people gain weight. It seems that, for survival, the body may be designed to store more fat during times with less sleep.
Researchers from Stanford University in California and the University of Wisconsin did the study. They found that the best amount of sleep for weight control is 7.7 hours a night.
The Public Library of science published the findings in its journal Medicine . Internet users can read the full study, free of charge, at plos. org.

A. The more you sleep, the farther away you are from obesity.
B. Those who don’t sleep at all are the most likely to put on weight.
C. Sleeping contributes more to obesity than eating.
D. It’s not wise to use sleep hours for exercise.
47. When you sleep 7.7 hours a night, you will ______ .

Born on a cold night in the church of a small Austrian village, Silent Night, the world’s most famous Christmas carol, is celebrating its 190th anniversary.
The song, known as Stille Nacht in the original German, was first performed on December 24, 1818, in the tiny village of Oberndorf, as a local assistant priest, Joseph Mohr, sought to comfort his followers, suffering from poverty and misery in the Napoleonic Wars.
“ He asked his friend Franz Xaver Gruber, a teacher, to compose the music for six verses(韵文) he had written two years before, and they performed the song together at mass with the help of a simple guitar,” says Renate Ebeling-Winkler, a historian and expert on the topic.
The song was an immediate success but remained a secret for many years, until an organ delivery man from Tyrol took note of it on his way through the village.
It soon became a favorite with Tyrolean singers, traveling up and down the continent in the winter to earn money.
“Admired for its resistance to Napolleon, Tyrol was very popular with allied(同盟的) countries and its best singers, like the Rainer family, were world stars,” said Ebeling-Winkler.
These artists gave Silent Night worldwide fame, performing it at the royal court in London in 1827, in Moscow in 1831 and in New York in 1839. By this time, its origins had been largely forgotten and Mohr died in 1848 without ever knowing of his song’s success.
Franz Xaver Gruber only found out about it in 1854 when the carol was almost considered to belong to Michael Haydn, the brother of famed composer Joseph Haydn. But Silent Night had already made its way into German school books and into the Catholic and Protestant churches.
Often seen as the typical Christmas carol, it has been translated into more than 330 languages, bridging social, religious and cultural divides and contributing to a brief break in the battlefields of World War 1 on Christmas Eve in 1914.
Every year, thousands of tourists, many from Asia, travel to the little village to take part in a Christmas Eve ceremony in front of the small chapel.
This year, 190 years after the first performance, the Silent Night ceremony was again held in the afternoon, and broadcast on the Internet.

Animal Friends Connection has rescued a young dog that was shot by a rifle in a rural area west of Galt.
The shepherd mix was found a week ago on a ranch on Orr Road, located between Galt and Thornton, said Animal Friends President Patricia Sherman and Jasauna Vigil, a veterinary technician(兽医专家) who works at the animal rescue center on Cherokee Lane. “She's a very, very sweet dog,” Sherman said.
The dog, 20 pounds underweight, underwent surgery Monday afternoon to remove bullet fragments and install a metal plate, Sherman said. The bullet broke the dog's upper forearm in half.
“On us, it would be where the biceps (二头肌)are,” Vigil said. The bullet then went into her upper forearm and out again, then into her right hind leg, Vigil said.
A farmer in the Orr Road area was driving to his granddaughter's softball game during the late afternoon April 7 when he stopped his truck because he heard a noise, Vigil said. He then heard the dog and eight of her puppies whimpering in and near a water ditch (a ninth puppy died). The farmer looked for the dog and puppies and took them home, Vigil said. The farmer doesn't want to be interviewed by the media or have his name disclosed, according to Vigil and Sherman.
“He's a low-key guy,” Vigil said. Both women visited the farmer and took the mother dog, about 1 year old, to a local veterinary hospital that supports Animal Friends. A veterinarian there determined the wounds came from a rifle, Sherman said.
The mother dog has three names — the farmer calls her Lucky, the farmer's wife calls her Lucky Lou and the veterinarian calls her Chardonnay.
The farmer and his wife are keeping the eight puppies until Animal Friends staff can make sure there isn't any disease that could spread to the puppies, Vigil said.
57. What do we know about Animal Friends Connection from this passage?
A. It’s a hospital for animals only.
B. It’s an organization that help animals.
C. It’s a group of people who keep dogs as pets.
D. It’s place where animals meet and make friends.
58. What happened to the dog?
A. It lost one of its hind legs in a surgery.
B. It was badly hurt by a truck on a ranch.
C. It was seriously wounded by a rifle shot.
D. All of its puppies drowned in a water ditch.
59. What’s the right order of the following events according to the passage? a. The dog was taken to the veterinary hospital.
b. The farmer found the dog and its puppies.
c. Someone shot the dog with a rifle.
d. The dog gave birth to nine puppies.
e. Vigil and Sherman got to know about the dog.
A. dcbae B. ecdab C. abced D. dcbea
60. Which of the following would be most likely to happen after the end of the story?

Internet users can read the full study, free of charge, at plos. org.
