On Jane Austen’s View of Love and Marriage on Pride and Prejudice

ABSTRACT

Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen’s masterpiece which was written at the end of the 18th century and the early of 19th century. It is in this work that the author portrayed a series of vivid image of women.

Through the description of the Bennet family ’s second daughter Elizabeth and noble Darcy ’s marriage, and how Elizabeth ’s sisters and her girlfriend's treat their marriage differently , it reveals the author's views on marriage: with the aim to get

property, money and social status ,then the marriage is wrong; a marriage is also stupid if people don’t take the above factors into account. She opposes marriage for money and also opposes to take marriage lightly. She thinks that affection should be concluded the cornerstone of an ideal marriage.

First of all: society attributes affect in people's views on marriage

The Bennett couple is the only old couple that Jane Austen described in the in pride and prejudice . This old couple's marriage is a tragedy. This kind of tragedy results from it’s current marriage custom and system. As the author describes: Mr. Bennett "captivated by youth and beauty, and that appearance of good humor which youth and beauty generally give, had married a woman whose weak understanding and illiberal mind had very early in their marriage put and end to all real affection for her". But as Mr Bennett naturally like rural environment and reading, he got some main fun from these hobbies. And to his wife, though he don't owe her, but he sometimes make fun of her ignorance. Though this is not the fun that ordinary man would like to get from their wives, but Mr Bennett ’s behavior is, in fact, already destroying their marriage obligations and etiquettes with his wisdom and talent. Second:money and status is not the only condition of a happy marriage

In the l8 century, wealth is still the focus of the society’s middle and upper class when they choose their spouse.

Mr. William Collins is a man "seems clumsy and funny, lack of manhood, but also a man who is good at scheming, and is very good at flattering the powerful people with all his heart." Because he got the gentlewoman Catherine’s recognition, he succeeded in getting the job as a vicar, then his false pride expanded with no limitation. He got married just because he want to find a potential woman who can steward the family and to set an example for his parish. Charlotte is very realistic and realized that for a girl like her, without an impressive looking and ,at the age of 27, in order to survive, to have a home, to get the basic material which can help her keep alive, she will get married. The two fitted in easily and rushed into marriage. Their marriage is too straightforward, rational, plain, and reveals the chilly essence of the capitalist class -- marriage is their "bread", and marriage is their future. It ’s not important how their husbands treat them as long as he is a gentleman with enough property. For them, marriage is just a task of seeking security . Wei Ken is a man who has a horrible morality and he always eats the bread of idleness, but he has a graceful outlooking and talks gently which gives him an army of charm, but Wei Ken ’s social status is not high, and don ’t have a lot of property inheritance, so it leads to his extreme greedy for money. Though Lydia has no power or money,he is willing there is woman who can keep him company when he run his way, pushed by his gambling debts from Brighton. Nothing on the book specifically pointed out the reason why Wei chose Lydia as his wife. But money plays an important role in his agreement to marry Lydia. Because at last ,it was Mr. Darcy who payed the debt and gave Lydia one thousand pounds and bought Wei a government post so he won his marriage with Lydia .

Three:blind passion leads to an unfortunate marriage .

Bennett's youngest daughter Lydia is a simple, frivolous and vanity girl. "if anyone pushes her forward and gives her an impulse, she will throw herself into anyone's arm. Her feeling is always fluctuating". Lydia ’s affection to Wei Ken was completely based on his “nice-looking face, well shaped body and charming manner”. Their relationship is completely built on lust and on the surface without a single love as its foundation. It can be concluded that is neither practical nor romantic. What dose Lydia get is just the satisfaction of the flesh. Their marriage is hypocritical and full of impulse because they had their marriage with Darcy ’s intervention. Without love, without property and without due dignity and grace, only with the impulse of the

beauty and flesh. So their marriage was destined to be an unfortunate marriage.

Four:intellect and affection is the cornerstone of a happy marriage.

Elizabeth and Darcy's marriage is the most perfect, the most successful ideal marriage in pride and prejudice, their being together is really built on the basis of love. The combination of they two proved that intellect and affection is necessity for a happy marriage. From 16th century to 18th century, the British upper class still emphasize they should choose their spouse who match their social status but they do not deny that love and affection is the premise key for a marriage. Though Elizabeth don ’t have so lovely a face like Jane, but she is clever, lively and lovely, she has a rich individual character and connotation. Elizabeth has realized the trend that people tend to marry the one who has a good fortune and social status, but she didn't lose myself. She chose to continue her pursue of love bravely. It is Elizabeth's this uncommon manner and noble moral attracted Darcy so much. Love is without conditions, but the inside feeling who got involved. And marriage is different from love. A marriage must have a material base and economic support, and marriage is inevitable for human to survive and develop , there are so many factors to take into consideration. A happy marriage must be emotional and rational balanced, and the unity of material and spiritual.

Anyway, through the five different treated marriage, the novel pride and prejudice reflects the women from middle-class families hold different attitudes when it comes to marriage, describes the true condition of that time, which also reflects the author's views on marriage: marriage is often limited by many factors such as personality, property and social status. But she stressed that both men and women should concluded affection as the cornerstone of an ideal marriage, a marriage for property, money and position is wrong; do not taking the above factors into account is also stupid.
