Questions 67 to 76 are based on the following passage.

A lot of Western parents wonder how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids. They wonder what these parents do to produce so many math brains and musical talents. Well, I can tell them, because I've done it. Here are some things my daughters were never allowed to do:

• have a playdate

• watch TV or play computer games

• choose their own extracurricular activities

• get any grade less than an A

• not be the No. 1 student in every subject except gym and drama

• play any instrument other than the piano or violin

• not play the piano or violin.

I'm using the terms

There are studies showing marked differences between Chinese and Westerners when it comes to parenting. In one study of 50 Western American mothers and 48 Chinese immigrant mothers, almost 70% of the Western mothers said that

What Chinese parents understand is that nothing is fun until you're good at it. To get good at anything you have to work, and children on their own never want to work; therefore, it is crucial to override their preferences. Things are always the hardest at the beginning, which is where Western parents tend to give up. But if done properly, the Chinese strategy of determined practice is crucial for excellence. Once a child starts to excel at something, they get praise, admiration and satisfaction. This builds confidence, and makes the once not-fun activity fun.

I've thought long and hard about this and I think there are three big differences between the Chinese and Western parental mind-sets.

First, Western parents are extremely anxious about their children's self-esteem. They worry about how their children will feel if they fail. Chinese parents don’t feel the same way. They assume strength, not fragility, and as a result they behave very differently.

For example, if a child comes home with an A-minus on a test, a Western parent will most likely praise the child. The Chinese mother will ask what went wrong. If the child comes home with a B on the test, some Western parents may worry that their child does not have aptitude in the subject or that there is something wrong with the curriculum. If a Chinese child gets a B, the Chinese mother would then get dozens, maybe hundreds of practice tests and work through them with her child for as long as it takes to get the grade up to an A.

Second, Chinese parents believe that their kids owe them everything. The reason for this is unclear, but it's probably a combination of Confucian beliefs and the fact that the parents have sacrificed so much for their children. The understanding is that Chinese children must spend their lives repaying their parents by obeying them and making them proud.

Most Westerners don’t have the same view. My husband, Jed, actually has the opposite view. “Children don't choose their parents,” he once said to me. “It’s

parents who give life to their kids, so it's the parents' responsibility to provide for them. Kids don't owe their parents anything.”

Third, Chinese parents believe that they know what is best for their children and therefore override all of their children's own desires and preferences. It's not that Chinese parents don't care about their children. Just the opposite. They would give up anything for them. It's just an entirely different parenting model.

My seven-years-old daughter Lulu was playing piano, and working on a piece called

Back at the piano, Lulu resisted. Then I threatened her with no dinner, no Christmas presents, and no birthday parties for years. When she still kept playing it wrong, I told her to stop being lazy. We worked right through dinner, and I wouldn't let Lulu get up. Still there seemed to be only negative progress, I began to have doubts.

Then, out of the blue, Lulu did it.

Lulu realized it the same time I did. She tried it again, hesitating. Then she played it more confidently and faster. A moment later, she was beaming.

Western parents worry a lot about their children's self-esteem. But as a parent, one of the worst things you can do for your child's self-esteem is to let them give up. On the flip side, there's nothing better for building confidence than learning you can do something you thought you couldn't.

There are all these books portraying Asian mothers as overdriven people indifferent to their kids' true interests. But it's a misunderstanding. The Chinese just have a totally different idea of how to do that. They believe that the best way to protect their children is by preparing them for the future, letting them see what they’re capable of, and arming them with skills, work habits and inner confidence that no one can take away.

Passage One

Questions 77 to 81 are based on the following passage.

Scratchy throats, stuffy noses and body aches all spell misery, but being able to tell if the cause is a cold or flu (流感) may make a difference in how long the misery lasts.

The American Lung Association (ALA) has issued new guidelines on combating colds and the flu, and one of the keys is being able to quickly tell the two apart. That’s because the prescription drugs available for the flu need to be taken soon after the illness sets in. As for colds, the sooner a person starts taking over-the-counter remedy, the sooner relief will come.

The common cold and the flu are both caused by viruses. More than 200 viruses can cause cold symptoms, while the flu is caused by three viruses—flu A, B and C. There is no cure for either illness, but the flu can be prevented by the flu vaccine (疫苗), which is, for most people, the best way to fight the flu, according to the ALA.

But if the flu does strike, quick action can help. Although the flu and common cold have many similarities, there are some obvious signs to look for.

Cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, runny nose and scratchy throat typically develop gradually, and adults and teens often do not get a fever. On the other hand, fever is one of the characteristic features of the flu for all ages. And in general, flu symptoms including fever and chills, sore throat and body aches come on suddenly and are more severe than cold symptoms.

The ALA notes that it may be particularly difficult to tell when infants and preschool age children have the flu. It advises parents to call the doctor if their small children have flu-like symptoms.

Both cold and flu symptoms can be eased with over-the-counter medications as well. However, children and teens with a cold or flu should not take aspirin for pain relief because of the risk of Reye syndrome (综合症),a rare but serious condition of the liver and central nervous system.

There is, of course, no vaccine for the common cold. But frequent hand washing and avoiding close contact with people who have colds can reduce the likelihood of catching one.

Passage Two

Questions 82 to 86 are based on the following passage.

Will Smith shines in The Pursuit of Happyness, a rags-to-riches tale about love, family, and pursuing the American Dream.

Smith portrays Christopher Gardner, a salesman struggling to make ends meet

for his wife (Thandie Newton) and son (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith). As the family’s financial problems grow, his wife collapses under the pressure and abandons him and their son.

Gardner’s luck goes from bad to worse as he and his son are forced to leave their home and must survive on the streets of San Francisco. The father and son are forced to move from place to place seeking shelter wherever they can find it, even spending one night in a subway bathroom.

Things start looking up for Gardner when he applies for an internship with a stock brokerage firm. Though the internship is unpaid, one of the 20 interns will be chosen to stay with the company full-time. The ambitious salesman battles unbeatable odds to make himself stand out from his competitors in the hopes of landing the position.

Smith and his real-life son Jaden bring an emotional depth to the characters they play. The serious role of Gardner is quite a change for Smith, who is known for his less serious roles battling aliens in the Men in Black movies and portraying a matchmaking “date doctor” in the romantic comedy Hitch.

He handles the role with a determined precision and turns out a spectacular performance, which generated talk of an Oscar. Though most scenes in the film have a very solemn feel, Smith’s cautious optimism and ambitious nature make us want to watch him succeed. In a role that could have easily been played syrupy-sweet, Smith instead chooses to let his raw emotions shine through adding a layer of realism.

His son, Jaden, proves to be a natural as well. Portraying a child whose life and economic background is so completely opposite from his own doesn’t seem to be a challenge for the young actor. He seems to have a true understanding of the character’s emotional state and expresses it with ease.

Newton also provides a noteworthy performance as Gardner’s wife who becomes so emotionally distressed she makes the difficult choice to abandon her child. While promoting the movie, Newton said she wanted audiences to identify with her character’s profound pain rather than writing her off as an uncaring witch. Her portrayal of the troubled woman walks a fine line between the two.

While the story is a moving tale about a father’s love for his son and working hard to achieve dreams, it is more than that. The Pursuit of Happyness is also a painful portrayal of the problem of homelessness in society. Perhaps what makes the film so powerful is that it is based on a true story. The problems that Gardner faces are problems faced by many in society every day.

Anyone who is familiar with Gardner’s story will not be surprised at the way the film ends. However, the audiences found themselves wanting to see more from the latter part of Gardner’s life. They guess that is why the film was titled The Pursuit of Happyness.

For this reason, the movie is not a feel-good picture that will leave you with the warm fuzzies. Instead, it is a touching fictional portrayal of a problem that is all too real. Chances are that this is not a film that you will quickly forget.

D. over-the-counter drugs can be taken to ease the misery caused by a cold or the flu
