The superior man does not promote(提拔) a man simply on account of (由于)his words, not does he put aside good words because of the man.
A craftsman who wishes to do his work well must first sharpen(注意此构词法,形容词或可以在其后加上en就会变成相应的动词,如strength力气,力量强大;strengthen,加强,增强) his tools.
The superior man aims at (以... 后面加名词或者动词ing形式)harmony but not at uniformity. The mean (这里的mean做形容词卑鄙的意思讲)man aims at uniformity but not at harmony.
If you have things done hastily, you will not reach the goal. If you only see small gains, you will not accomplish great tasks.
When a ruler's personal conduct is correct, he will be obeyed without the issuing of orders. If his personal conduct is not correct, he may issue orders(发令), but they will not be followed(注意obey和follow的用法,两个都表示服从的意思,但是这里很巧妙的做了一下处理,没有重复使用obey或者follow,一句话当中尽量避免重复的字词。).
Only when the year becomes cold do we know how the pine(松树) and the cypress(柏树,栢属植物) are the last to fade.(only 用在句首,主句要进行倒装,所以do 提到了主句的句首。)
To see what is right and not to do it is want of (缺乏,相当于lack of)courage.
When we see men of worth, we should think of equalling them; when we see men of a contrary character, we should turn inwards and examine ourselves.
The superior man wishes to be slow in his speech and earnest in his conduct.(slow 和 earnest形成了一对相反的词,讷与敏)
The commander of the forces of a large state may be carried off, but the will of even a common man cannot be taken from him.
The wise are free from perplexities; the virtuous from anxiety; and the bold from fear.
To subdue one's self and return to propriety, is perfect virtue. If a man can for one day subdue himself and return to propriety, all under heaven will ascribe perfect virtue to him. Is the practice of perfect virtue from a man himself, or is it from others?
Let the superior man never fail reverentially to order his own conduct, and let him be respectful to others and observant of propriety:-- then all within the whole country will be his brothers. What has the superior man to do with being distressed because he has no brothers? The superior man seeks to perfect the
admirable qualities of men, and does not seek to perfect their bad qualities. The mean man does the opposite of this.
With what then will you recompense(报酬,补偿) kindness? Recompense injury with justice, and recompense kindness with kindness.
Specious words confound(搞乱,混淆) virtue. Want of forbearance(隐忍) in small matters confounds great plans.
Those whose courses are different cannot lay plans for one another.
