Letter from Zhuge Liang to His Son
A gentleman behaves himself as tranquillity perfects his character and frugality fosters his virtues. Only the eyes that seek no fame or wealth, can see their destinations; only the hearts that rest in peace and ease, can reach their distant ends.
Learning, which requires tranquillity, feeds talents; it is learning and no more that adds talents, and aspiration and no else that spurs learning. Morale slackens with negligence, while temper cannot be tried with impulsiveness.
As time flies, the older he is, the less he expects of himself; and most likely, becomes left out of the time, like a fallen leaf from the branch into the wind. Where will he drift to, being left with regretful loneliness, if not alone, under the shabby roof?
